Co-headlined by Panther and The Cave Singers, this year’s Sunburn music festival drew crowds from both on- and off-campus. However, changes made by CBB concerning Sunburn and KLC’s once-separate budgets makes next year’s festival unpredictable.

Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote in the poem “Spring” that the season reminded her not of the eternal renewal of life, but rather “the brains of men / Eaten by maggots,” “an empty cup” and “a flight of uncarpeted stairs.” The poem’s final image is both cute and sinister: “April / Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers.” Flowers are not all the month bears this year, however, as poets and poetry scholars of regional and national renown alight in Oregon just in time for the beginning of National Poetry Month.

“What’s the Use of Poetry,” Lewis & Clark College’s Poetry Symposium, kicks off this Saturday afternoon in Smith Hall with a critical lecture by Marjorie Perloff, emeritus professor of English at Stanford University and one of the most well-known poetry critics and scholars writing in English today. Her speech, entitled “Unoriginal Genius: A Genealogy,” will explore the poetics of contemporary language poets Joan Retallack and Lyn Hejinian, who will also participate in the symposium. Both authors give 35-minute readings from their own work following Perloff’s lecture. Afterwards, all three will participate in a panel discussion, reception, and book signing.

Sadly, “Lord, Save us From Your Followers,” in nationwide release this June, will likely have a similar effect as that of other controversial, topical films of the last few years, like “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Jesus Camp,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Passion of Christ”: it will divide the country into two extremes, one calling it sacrilege and the other outright Gospel. Somewhere will be the average, free-thinking American, whose voice, in its calm rationality, will go unnoticed.

Ghost story plays should most certainly be staged at SE Foster and 67th Ave. Foster Road (the closer it gets to 82nd Avenue, the smuttier) is a haven for warehouses, laundromats and pawnshops, so prepare to be spooked when you finally stumble upon Performance Works Northwest, nuzzled between a Russian bakery and a Sav-a-Lot. The three different worlds presented in the theatre’s current production, collectively titled Dead of Winter, will transport you from the dreary, rain-soaked, and all-too-realistic land of Foster Road straight into the fantastic and beyond.

The excitement on campus when hip-hop group Blue Scholars arrived last Friday was palpable. Easily one of the most anticipated nights at Lewis & Clark in recent memory, the show lived up to the hype. Students staked out their place in line hours before doors opened around 8:30 p.m. and packed Evans Auditorium as Legal Lies kicked off the night for a sold-out audience.

“Atonement,” the story as it exists in any medium – is a bit like “Legend of the Hidden Temple”’s Shrine of the Silver Monkey. There are three parts that must be put together in order to experience its true glory – the strong acting and beautiful images (both of which the movie captures wholly) and a complete understanding of the plot and characters, which, unfortunately can only be had through reading the book, as the movie is tragically short. In short, the movie alone doesn’t provide the full depth of the book...

Nine months of touring—a rock star’s pregnancy. But there was no post-partum depression to be found at the Crystal Ballroom last Saturday...

Shakespeare opens the main stage performances for the year with the well-known “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The classic play has been taken along a new path by director, alum Stephen Weeks (’05) who includes an unusual take on costumes and set (both designed by Michael Olin). The visual appearance of this play combined with the acting make this a very unique version of the legendary classic.

There are different types of music for different types of moods. What might be appropriate for a long road trip or a party with friends wouldn’t be as easy to listen to trying to study late at night. Generally, the differences lay in a song’s ability to sooth or excite the spirit in a given situation. José González’s new album, In Our Nature, is filled with songs that sooth and make for good nighttime listening...

Three out of every four college-age girls have seen Justin Timberlake live—really. A hand count at a recent LC dinner party confirmed this: three out of the four girls present had seen an *NSync concert, and one of the three had also seen JT in solo performance, at the embarrassingly late age of 17. Those are serious numbers, which makes Justin Timberlake’s sophomore album FutureSex/LoveSounds a serious matter.

KLC Radio presented its 19th annual concert, Sunburn, last Saturday in Stamm Dining Hall. Decorated with caution tape and signs warning of impending danger, Stamm played host to seven bands over the course of the evening: Quiet Countries, Books on Tape, The Robot Ate Me, The Whips and the Whistles, Dagger of the Mind, The Hunches, and Dead Moon. The Photo Atlas, a Denver-based band scheduled to play, was forced to cancel when their van broke down in Utah.

Set in a 1929 cigar-making shop in Tampa, Florida, the storyline of “Anna in the Tropics” seems a far cry from the experiences of LC students today. But the LC Theatre Department has a tradition of productions that place student actors in settings and characters far removed from their own, and by this standard its choice of “Anna in the Tropics” for this semester’s Main Stage production seems perfectly customary.

“Night Watch” is a Russian fantasy/thriller movie about an ancient curse: a “Chosen One,” the classic battle between good and evil—and vampires. If that description doesn’t excite you, or if it completely turns you off, just stick with me here for a minute. I can honestly say that almost any movie featuring both “thriller” and “vampires” in its description is not my cup of tea. Yet I found myself pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained as I walked out of this film.

Adrian Tomine’s graphic novels are unsettling, his characters are mean and pathetic, the plot is awkward and Tomine’s illustrations are precise and cold. These elements make the comic frustrating and yet they also constitute the basis for its strange, all-too-human appeal. Summer Blonde is a collection of four short stories taken from Tomine’s comic book Optic Nerve.

Pho Van is ‘sleek and chic’

Pho Van was different from my usual Vietnamese eatery experience in high school, which consisted of a giant bowl of $3 Pho (beef noodle soup) at a tiny dive with not much else on the menu—a popular lunch destination among my friends. Nothing on Pho Van’s menu is $3. Tea, maybe, but that’s it. It’s striving to be the sleek and chic version of Vietnamese cuisine, like many popular Thai or Pan-Asian restaurants, and it’s certainly in the right neighborhood. Surrounded by Asian décor, deep reds, and dark woods, it has a warm, romantic atmosphere.

I’ve always maintained that Much Ado About Nothing is one of those plays that it’s almost impossible to do badly, and I’m glad to be proven right once again. That said, it was an extremely pleasant surprise to discover that Portland State University’s Theatre and Arts department has not only done Shakespeare’s best (in my opinion) comedy well, but that they had even taken a step away from the performance trademarked by Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson in their 1993 film version, and faithfully copied ever since by theatres across the country.
