Track teams come out strong in Newberg

The Pioneer track and field teams were in Newberg on Saturday, participating in the Frank Haskins Invitational. The Pioneer women had a strong third place finish and the men placed seventh.
Cheyenne Feliz (’11) dominated the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.09, easily beating the next closest time of 27.75. Feliz also finished second in the 400 meter dash and anchored both women’s relay teams. The 4 x 100 relay team of Feliz, Marissa Silver (’11), Katherine Groesbeck (’11), and Lisa Housman (’08) finished fourth for the Pioneers.
Cayley Rasmussen (’10) and Alla Khalitova (’10) held down the high jump, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Meanwhile, Groesbeck tallied up more points for the Pios in the triple jump and the long jump. Maren Swanson (’11) won the discus throw with a 103-00 and Roxanne Gilbride (’09) came out victorious in the javelin throw with a 127-07.
For the men, Joevante Mayes (’11) placed third in the 100 meter dash and fourth in the 200 meter. Jeff Carman (’09) finished second in the 5000 meter with a time of 15:44.84. Leif Bullock finished third in the 1500 meter run, gaining six points for the men, who ended up in seventh place.
On the season, Mayes holds multiple top marks, including the 9th overall best in the 200m dash. Both the men’s and women’s teams are 1-1 in conference so far this year, with each team falling to Puget Sound but defeating the Pacific Boxers.
The Pioneers compete next week at the Charles Bowles Invitational at Willamette University. The competition will mark the first of two meets at Willamette in 2008.
