Softball drops triple-header to Pacific
by Jessica Voigt // staff writer
Pioneers softball had a tough weekend against the Pacific Boxers – now tied for first in the Northwest Conference – losing all four home games.
In the first game, the Boxers struck early, with four runs in the first inning, including a triple and a solo home run. Another four runs were put up in the fourth, and after loading the bases in the third, the Pioneers gave up three runs to bring the Pacific total to 11. Despite the rain, the Pios got an RBI from Jamie Moon (’10) in the fifth, who drove in Sheree Miura (’09). Miura had walked earlier in the inning, and her run put the final score at 11-1.The second game was postponed due to rain, and the Pios
played three games on Sunday.
Again, the Boxers came after the Pioneer pitchers early and put up nine runs in the first two innings. In the third inning, pitcher Kelly Vega (’11) walked in the tenth Boxer run with the bases loaded, but surrendered no runs afterwards.
Graduate student Nathalie Matson gave up a run in the fourth and six runs in the fifth, including a grand slam to Boxer Carrie Maerz. The Pios put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a solo home run from Matson – her first hit of the season. Sheree Miura and Paige McFeeley (’11) also had RBI singles.
For the third game of the series, the Boxers produced at least a run in every inning, and exploded with nine total in the fourth and fifth innings.
Unfortunately, the Pios were shut out by Pacific pitchers Miranda McNealy and Andrea Bansen; it was Bansen’s fifth win of the season. Karyne Sander (’10) had the only hit of the game with a double in the first inning.
For her ninth win of the season, Pacific pitcher Miranda McNealy threw a no-hitter against the Pios. McFeeley had a tough game against the Boxers, who put up nine runs in five innings, finishing the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
