History nerds unite over love of the past in new club
by Maisha Foster-O'Neal // staff writer
The Lewis & Clark History Club has a short history. Kali Harper (’10) founded the club only this year. Though it may not have the experience or numbers of some other clubs, it is fueled by its members’ love for history and the desire to expand their own historical knowledge.
The history club hosts a variety of events. At the most recent meeting, members went off campus to watch Master and Commander, a historical movie set in the early 19th century about a naval commander from Europe. History Club also conducted a roundtable discussion about Hugo Chavez and attended a presentation on Communism. The events focus on different time periods and locations at every meeting.
If one week’s topic doesn’t sound exceptionally interesting, the next topic just might. A broad range of topics makes the club appealing to many different students with different interests. The Facebook representation of the club, LC History Club, has about 22 students within its ranks. “It’s pretty small at the moment as not many people know about it,” said Harper.
History Club is an outside-the-classroom opportunity for students to pool their knowledge about history and learn from one another.
“The club is important because there are a lot of interesting history majors out there who have a lot to share about whatever it is they love about history,” says Harper.
Of course, interested students do not have to be history majors to join the meetings. Anyone with an interest in history is more than welcome to attend a meeting.
Meetings are usually held on Monday nights. Times vary depending on the event of the week. Students with questions or with an interest in joining History Club should contact .
